Need help picking out Christmas gifts for your teen this year? Tired of spending time and money selecting THE perfect gift only to find it tossed in the back corner of your teen’s closet a month later? As the mom of a teenager, I know how difficult it can be. So, I’ve talked to a bunch of teens to find out what THEY REALLY want this year.

Before I begin, let me just say, making Christmas all about the gifts makes me nuts. To me, it’s about family, faith, and gratitude. With that said, when I was a teenager I was as laser-focused on what I got under the tree as my teen, and many teens, are now. And to be honest, I do refrain from buying a lot of her “wants” during the year so I can splurge at Christmas time.

When buying Christmas gifts for teens, my first rule of thumb is to ask them what they want with as many details as possible (a direct link is ideal!) I’ve learned that picking stuff out that I THINK my teen daughter wants is a bad idea. If I get the wrong color, the wrong brand, the wrong anything, she will do her best to show me she’s excited about it, but I can always see the wave of disappointment in her eyes. In a way, when I get it wrong it sends the message that I really wasn’t listening to her or don’t care about what’s important to her.

And brand names are extremely important to teens. Yes, it may seem silly and shallow to us, but owning “the right” product creates a sense of belongingness with the other brand fans and makes our teens feel like they fit in more with their peers. We can continue to lecture them that brands shouldn’t matter, but it doesn’t change the fact that they do matter to them (and let’s be real, to a lot of adults as well).

If you’re like me, you’ll look at the list below and think, “Seriously?! I don’t even know what half this stuff is and I certainly don’t spend that much on myself.” If so, keep in mind that many teens would rather have one thing that is the right brand and style than several things that are knock-offs or cheaper versions of what they asked for. In fact, getting not quite what they wanted may be worse than not getting it at all.

In case it helps, here’s how we’re doing Christmas this year. I told my daughter how much I’m comfortable spending and she’s coming up with a wish list that fits my budget. To do this, she’ll have to prioritize what she really wants versus what she thinks would be cool to have because everyone else has it. It will also prevent me from buying more stuff just to donate next year.

If you don’t have the opportunity to ask your teen what they want or you want to surprise them with something they won’t think totally sucks, here is a teen-approved list of gift ideas that are popular this year.
